アメリカの図書館といえば、延滞すると罰金を取られたという思い出があります。

自宅近所の図書館は建物が古く、長居はしたくない感じなのですが、建て替え移転の計画もあるようで、期待しています。

★stay away from the classroom, 不登校である、授業に出ていない

Many libraries are providing a haven for students who stay away from the classroom.

He has been staying away from the study group. What happened to him?



★be down on one's luck, 運に見放されている、(不運続きで)お金に困っている

They help connect homeless people and others who are down on their luck with housing, health care and food.

私の例文です。

He was so down on his luck that he couldn't afford to buy the bread.

★lay claim to, ...を主張する

The U.S. can also lay claim to having the biggest library in the world: the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

私の例文です。

I can lay claim to being the most enthusiastic listener of this radio program.

Lesson 19のテーマは、Overprotective Parents(過保護な親たち)。

私の母も過保護気味で、息子がいい年になっても電話をかけてきます。

風邪をひいていないか、みかんを送ろうか、と。

お母さん、みかんは東京でも買えるよ、と答える息子。

会社だけには電話をかけないでくれよ、これが私の今の思いです。



2019年度第3回の英検1級をまた受験しまして、一次試験は突破しました。

二次試験を3月1日に控えております。

ま、これは頑張るとして、一次試験の英作文の訓練は、二次試験の二分間スピーチにも共通するところがあると思います。

しかし、英検1級の参考書はなかなかありません。

Parenthood is more hands-off in many other countries.

My father was hands-off when I was a kid.


★drive someone to, ...するように(人)を駆り立てる

She drove us to succeed academically and professionally.

私の例文です。

My father drove me to study English.


★bald-faced, 厚かましい、ずうずうしい

The bald-faced sense of entitlement and lack of ethics take your breath away, don't they?

私の例文です。

My father was so bald-faced that I was ashamed for him.


★stay in constant contact, 常に接触[連絡]を保つ

Technology lets parents and their grown-up kids stay in constant contact.

私の例文です。

I use the telephone to stay in constant contact with my parents. 


★do someone a disservice, (人)に害を及ぼす

They're doing their kids disservice by not letting them experience struggle and failure.

私の例文です。

My father did me a disservice. He kicked me out of the house!

★be basically laid out for, 基本的に...のために設計されている

American cities are basically laid out for motor vehicles.

TOEIC is basically laid out for business person who needs to show their English ability.


★piecemeal introduction, 段階的な導入

The thing is, piecemeal introduction of bike lanes, pedestrian zones and traffic calming measures can cause confusion - and make walking and bicycling more dangerous.

piecemealには、計画性がなく、という意味があるようです。

私の例文です。

Your plan to study English is a piecemeal effort. I recommend you complete one textbook then go another one.


★on a happier note, もっと明るい話としては

On a happier note, one reason for optimism is that starting next year, New York City will limit the number of cars and other vehicles entering Manhattan During weekday busines hours.
