I hope you're having a good day.

I hope you're having a good day.

今回はfacebookグループへ投稿したものを再掲します。

L24(2)のoverstretch oneselfのヘザーさんの解説で、Do more than we're capable of, like we're reaching too far into a stretch. とあるのですが(stl52ブログより)、

reaching too far into a stretchがわかりません。

このstretchの意味はランダムハウスでは
「(事が)無理なこと、能力を超えること」
とあるため、

「能力を超える遠過ぎる所まで達しようとする」

という意味でしょうか。

L24(5)に、

An effective manager keeps his or her eye on the big picture.
有能なマネージャーは、物事をいつも大局的に見ているのです。

とあります。

このeffective managerが「有能なマネージャー」となっているのが気になっていたのですが、横山カズさんのtweetに答えがありました。

https://twitter.com/KAZ_TheNatural/status/975722717986013184

"Effective"
根本的な問題解決としての効果。
はっきりよい結果を出す。
結果を重視。

結果を重視するマネージャー、というわけですね。

一応辞書も引いておきます。

effective
(望ましい)結果を生む(ランダムハウス英和)

successful in producing a desired or intended result (オックスフォード米語辞典)

In L24 (5), There is a sentense of "They make a point of being open-minded and willing to admit that they're not always right."

The Japanese translation is 「偏見を持たないこと」、そして自分がいつも正しいとは限らないと進んで認めること」を忘れないようにしていますね。

I want to talk about the usage of "be willing to" in this sentense.

I know that "be willing to" does not mean 「喜んで~する」. It means "if I am asked, I will happily do."

See below websites for more explanation on this expression.

"be willing to ?" の意味、勘違いしていませんか?
https://kiwi-english.net/23187

「be willing to に注意!」

Now, look at the Japanese translation in the textbook. "Be willing to admit" is being translated as 「進んで認める」。

This translateion is nice,isn't it?

On the very bottom line in L24 (5), there is a sentense of "that's what I'm here for." And the Japanese translation is そのために私がいるのですよ。

I found this intersting because I would make sentense like "that's why I'm here." from this Japanese sentense.

I know the sentense like "that's what I thought." But "that's what I'm here for" was new to me.

So I googled and found below website that well explains this expressin.

https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q1326984223

The last guy in the website says this expression is commonly used by girls. Oh, Lidia Grace is girl. That's why.

I hope this helps.

I have a question in L24 (6).

Heather-san said below at the end of the Talk the Talk.

Heather Howard: Oh, there are few things more harmful than refusing to admit error. For one thing a person who can't admit they were wrong is never gonna grow or improve. Why should they when they are so fabulous already?
(quoted from stl52 blog)

We don't understand the last sentese of "Why should they when they are so fabulous already?"

Could you paraphrase this ?
