★gain a new lease on life, 活気を取り戻す
It shut its doors a couple of years ago after most of the stores there went out of business, but now it's gained a new lease on life.
turn over a new leafを思い出しました。
私の例文です。
I was exhausted and went to bed to gain a new lease on life.
★indictment, (制度などの)欠陥[誤り]を示すもの、悪い[非難されるべき]点
英検1級パス単では1663番に「起訴」として出ています。
That's quite an indictment of American society, isn't it?
私の例文です。
Gender inequality is an indictment of Japanese society.
★crippling debt, 巨額の借金、ばく大な負債
Medical bills, crippling debt or other personal financial difficulties mean they can't afford to pay for housing.

★play a role, 一因となる、役割を果たす
Those factors also play a role.
「役割を果たす」はわかりますが、「一因となる」はイメージが違いました。「一因」にはネガティブなイメージがありました。
そこで、Collinsで引いてみると、play a part/play a roleで、
If something or someone plays a part or plays a role in a situation, they are involved in it and have an effect on it.
「関与し、影響を与える」ということなので悪影響でもよいと理解できました。
私の例文です。
Poverty plays a role in terrorism.
★contradiction in terms, ことば自体の矛盾
"Homeless college student" sounds like a contradiction in terms.
oxymoron（撞着語法）もビジ英では頻出ですね。
私の例文です。
You're tired of sleeping? It's a contradiction in terms.
★find oneself doingまたは補語
(4)(5)で4回も、「find oneself doingまたは補語」の形が出てきます。
(4) find themselves out on the street
(4) find themselves facing homelessness
(5) find themselves homeless
(5) find themselves out on the street
find oneselfで、「（気がついてみると）...にいる、...である、...している」という意味です。
私の例文です。
I find myself surf the net while studying.
