気になった点を調べてみました。
page 24の下から2行目の that very argumentのveryは形容詞で、thatを強調しています。
page 24の下から4行目の it's not as if they can give their informed consentのit's not as if は、「～な訳でもあるまいし」、という慣用句のようです。
つまり、「ペットはインフォームドコンセントをできるわけでもあるまいし」、というわけです。
