【ビジ英徹底復習】2017 05 L4 Email Etiquette 456 ★ Casualness in emails

|
About five years ago, I had a coworker who was American and worked in the same office in Japan. When I first got an email from him, the beginning of the email was "Hi Honda-san." That was the first time I got email from any American coworkers.

I remember I was very surprised by its casualness.

When Japanese people write e-mails in Japanese, it is normal to write in polite language. However, I noticed later when writing e-mails to Americans in English, I write very casual English.

Now when I write email to an American coworker, say, John, I start the email with "Hi John."

One of the topics of this lesson is about whether we should reply work-related emails we got on holiday. In my case, I don't read company emails on Saturdays and Sundays because I usually leave my company laptop in the office. So I cannot read company emails at home, I can read them on my mobile phone though. Fortunately, my boss doesn't force us to reply his emails on Holiday.

■意味を考えてみよう。今日取り上げる単語が含まれています

Never, ever send an email when you're angry.

I'd advise against emailing your boss to ask for a raise or a promotion.

The shorter and more succinct you can keep your message, the better.

That will still let you get a vague pleasantry in.

Emails can be copied, forwarded or printed, either innocently or maliciously.

I feel uncomfortable diving right into it.
