米国赴任150週目が終了。
今週はサンフランシスコ ベイエリアは雨が続きました。
昨年は雨が降らず、カルフォルニアの人は水不足に悩まされ、芝生へのスクリンプラーの使用が制限されたため、芝生が枯れました。Brown is new normal. 雨期に入り、雨が降り始め、リザバーの水位も上がってきました。そんな雨期も終了し、これからはまた自転車の季節だと思っていたところ、雨の日々がまた続いています。
とくに昨週末は大雨となり、職場の同僚の家では、隣家との間の塀が崩れ、アムトラックは脱線し川に車両が突っ込むという事故がカルフォルニアで起き、なんやかんやと慌ただしいなか、ナパバレーのセントヘレナに行ってきました。
そこのホテルで、なんと、チップを入れる封筒をみつけました。以前、ビニエットで出てきた、顧客に不評だったというあの封筒です。写真はこれです。
この封筒にチップを入れておきましたが、翌日そのチップは入ったままでした。2ドル入れましたが、少なかった、ということだったのでしょうか。
このホテルでは夕方、ワインとスナックが振舞われるのですが、そこで元Navyの夫婦と会話しました。アムトラックのダイニングカーで鍛えたソーシャライジング力です。私がNapa Soupという女性に人気の石鹸を話題にしようとしたところ、soupが通じない。。。 salt? と聞かれたりしました。語尾の p をはっきりと発音することが必要のようです。
3/13から Daylight Saving Time という名の夏時間がアメリカでは始まります。冬は終わり、さわやかな夏がやってきます。
