米国赴任141週目が終了。
明けましておめでとうございます。2016年もよろしくお願いします。
さて、年末休暇に Amtrak によるテキサスとニューオーリンズの旅に行ってきました。
まずは自宅最寄り駅の San Jose から LA まで、Coast Starlight 号で11時間の旅です。この Coast Starlight 号は Seattle - Portland - San Francisco - Santa Barbara - Los Angeles という西海岸の景勝ルートを走ります。
今回 San Jose への到着が2時間以上も遅れたため、LA 着も2時間以上遅れました。LA からニューオーリンズへの乗り継ぎ便の出発には、1時間しか余裕がないのですが、Coast Starlight 号の遅れはあらかじめリスクとして織り込み済みで、LA で一泊する予定を立てていたのが奏功しました。Amtrak は平気で2、3時間遅れるので、このような余裕を持った計画が必要となります。
LA ダウンタウンの日系ホテルで一泊した後、翌日はハリウッド観光です。先日の Thanksgiving 休暇 にもここには来たのですが、今回はWax Museum（蝋人形館）を見学したあと、チャイニーズシアターで Star Wars: The Force Awakens を鑑賞しました。蝋人形のあまりのリアルさに驚きました。
ハリウッドから Griffith Observatory へ Uber で行きました。土日以外は Griffith Observatory 行きの公共の交通機関がないのです。Uber を使うのは初めてでしたが、タクシーよりも、呼び方、目的地の指示、支払い方法のすべてがより簡単で、しかも料金も安いので気に入りました。そんなわけで今回の旅では Uber を多用することになります。
Griffith Observatory はグリフィス天文台ですが、LAの夜景が臨めるスポットとしても有名みたいです。
日暮れ直前に行ったため、Griffith Observatory からLAの昼間、夕焼け、そして夜景を堪能できました。有名なハリウッドサインも間近に臨めます。
ただ、冬の夜のため非常に寒かったです。帰りに Uber が山の上まで迎えに来てくれてよかった。Uber の運転手が山の上まで客を拾いに行くのを躊躇する可能性もあるわけで、その場合はとぼとぼと暗い山道を歩くことになっていたかもしれません。
LA の Union Staion で次の列車を待っているとき、アジア系の若者がスタバのコーヒーを配っていたのでご相伴にあずかりました。クリスマスにホームレスの人に配っているのだとか。そう、今日は12月25日。
LA Union Staion から夜10時に Sunset Limited 号に乗り込み、東へ向かいます。
