米国赴任142週目が終了。
クリスマスの夜10時に、LA Union Station から Sunset Limited号に乗りました。
一夜明けて、ツーソン、アリゾナ（Tuzson, AZ）に着きました。ここは砂漠地帯で、特に何もないので下車はしません。
列車のダイニングカーで朝食をとります。メニューからスクランブルエッグを選びます。クロワッサンとポテト、追加でベーコンをつけました。
Amtrakのダイニングカーはコミュニティ シーティングという方式を採っており、4人掛けのテーブルに詰めて座らされます。いわゆる相席です。
この方式では、一人旅でも食事中は他の乗客と会話を楽しんでください、ということになっています。英語でのコミュ力が試されるときです。
カップルでテーブルに着く場合、二人は向かい合うように座ってはいけません。横に並んで座らせられます。これはカップルでの会話ではなく、他の乗客との会話を即すためかもしれません。
ただ、このダイニングカー、すべての乗客が利用可能というわけではありません。
Amtrakでは、寝台車の利用客から優先的にlunchとdinnerの予約を取るため、コーチクラスの客には席が割り当てられない場合があります。
ただ、朝食は予約なしで利用可能のため、私は今回コーチクラスでしたが、利用できたわけです。
ダイニングカー以外に、スナックの販売店が車内にあるため、そこで何か食べ物などを買うことはできます。お金のないコーチクラスの客は、そちらで済ますことが多いようです。
コーチクラスとは普通座席のことです。とはいえ日本の電車より座席は広いです。
夜、隣の座席が空いていれば、コーチクラスでも横に丸まって寝れますが、そうでないときはやはり寝にくいです。
また、夜、車内は寒いため、コーチクラスではブランケットを持ち込む客が多いです。私は今回、寝袋を持ち込みました。寝袋にすっぽりと入り、リクライニングシートで寝るわけです。こんな人は他にはいません。
お金に余裕のある方は、やはり寝台車でのご利用をお勧めします。寝台車にはちゃんと枕も布団も付いていますので。共用シャワーもあります。
列車は砂漠地帯を進みます。
午後3時に、エルパソ、テキサス（El Paso, TX）に着く頃には雪が降って来ました。

◇ yet another の yet とは何者？
ビジ英には、なぜこの表現を Words and Phrases で取り上げないのだろうかと思うことが、たまにありますが、Generation Z Rising (1)でもありました。
yet another です。
アリス コリンズの台詞、And here is yet another area where things have dramatically changed.（ところが、その夏のアルバイトという分野も、様相が劇的に変化したのです。）に出てきます。
訳文では、「も」と簡単に表現されていますが、yet anotherには、「さらにもう一つ」、という意味があると思います。
現代は過去に比べていろいろなものが変わってきているが、夏のアルバイトという分野もまた、変わったのだ、ということでしょうね。
◇ mean のこんな意味
これも放送で取り上げていただきたかった箇所ですが、Generation Z Rising (2)の mean についてです。
Tougher economic realities meant they weren't born with silver spoons in their mouths.
の mean ですが、結果をもたらす、という意味ですね。
「より厳しい経済の現実」が「裕福な家に生まれなかった」という結果をもたらした。
という因果関係を表現しているということです。
もう少しわかりやすい例を挙げましょう。
リーダーズ英和辞典に Friction means heat. （摩擦すると熱を生じる）という例文があります。この例文は mean の4番目の意味（...という結果を生ずる）の例文です。
mean は狭義では refer to で置き換えられますが（A=B の形になります）、この例文は、摩擦の結果、熱が生じるという因果関係（A -> B）を示しています。
Tougher economic realities meant they weren't born with silver spoons in their mouths.の場合も、A=Bではなく、A ->Bの形ではないでしょうか。
私にはこの、meanが因果関係を表現できる、ということが新鮮な発見でした。
逆に言えば、因果関係を mean で表現できるのでは、と思いました。
例えば、「渋滞のため遅刻した」というような文を mean で表現できるはずだと。
Traffic jam meant I was late for the meeting. こんな文が成立するのでしょうか。
Twitterで見つけました。
Yesterday's traffic jam meant I missed the train.
このように mean で因果関係を表現できるということがわかりました。
