【ビジ英徹底復習】2015/9 Redefining Etiquette 1,2,3 ★ cable TV

|
米国赴任124週目が終了。

今回は英語でいってみましょう。(lang-8で添削済)

I pay $165/month for triple play service (cable TV, Internet, telephone) for a cable TV provider. There are too many channels (perhaps more than 100) for me to watch all of them. They offer free and on demand movies or dramas. That is great.

But I can see TV news on the net and also as I'm a member of Amazon Prime, I can watch free streaming movies and dramas as well, which seems to be enough for me and seems like I don't need the extra cable TV channels. Another option would be Netflix or Hulu and those rates look lower than the rates for cable TV.

That's why I called the cable TV provider to cancel my cable TV service the other day, meaning downgrade from triple play to dual play (Internet and telephone.) A land line is needed for me to join tele-conference from home since the cell phone reception is not good in my apartment. They said the new rate would be around $110. That would be good. Lower cost for cable TV service would be good.

Several days later I got a call from the same provider when I was having lunch at the company cafe and they asked the reason why I wanted to downgrade and what channel I used to watch, something like that, then offered a special promotion on triple play with 80 channels for just $90 (before tax).

Of course I accepted the offer. This will be almost as same rate as dual play after tax. I think they wanted me to continue to use cable TV service probably because they thought I might purchase paid dramas or movies.

I've never seen you go over the top with excessive politeness.

The lady in question didn't appreciate that at all, evidently.

She graded at me as she got out of the elevator.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

That's pretty passe now.

Time was if a man used foul language when addressing a group that included women, he would apologize to the women.

If a man started to tell an off-color story, someone would be sure to admonish him that there were ladies present.

I don't care what words he uses - as long as he doesn't condescend to women by apologizing to us.

I'd say that's all right, as long as there's no explicit ban on taking pictures during the ceremony and if you do so unobtrusively.

Good manners are based on respect, kindness and civility.
