【ビジ英徹底復習】2015/8 Recovering Job Market 1,2,3 ★ Canada part 1

米国赴任122週目が終了。

先週、カナダを10日間旅行してきました。ケベックシティ、モントリオール、トロント、バンクーバーと、東から西へ鉄道で横断しました。それぞれの都市にそれぞれの良さがありましたが、特に素晴らしかったのはトロントからバンクーバーまでの4泊5日のCanadian号による列車旅です。

オンタリオ州の森と湖から始まり、マニトバ州のプレーリーへ、最後はカナディアンロッキーへとダイナミックに変化します。

一方、車内はというとドームカー、ラウンジカー、バー、ダイニングカーを完備しており、フルサービスで提供される食事の素晴らしさはお値段以上かもしれません。

車内ではワインテイスティングや、ブルースのシンガーのショーなどのイベントも行われました。

乗客はカナダ国内(バンクーバー、トロントなど)、アメリカのほか、イギリスからの旅行者が目立ちました。あとはオーストラリアからの交換留学性も。コモンウェルスのつながりを感じました。ケンタッキーからフロリダに引っ越して老後を過ごす夫婦など、時間的に余裕のある年齢層のご夫婦での旅行が主流のようでした。

タブレットやkindle端末を持ち込んでいる人の割合が以外と多かったです。時間がたっぷりあるので本を読むわけです。紙の本の人も見かけましたが。

マニトバ州のウィニペグに4時間停車した際には希望者のみ別料金で参加できるCity Tourに参加しました。アルバータ州、カナディアンロッキーの街、ジャスパーに1時間停車した際には下車して街を散策しました。

VIA Rail Canadaのページに路線図がありますのでごらんください。この地図の赤い路線がトロントからバンクーバーのカナディアン号です。


話は変わり、カナダでは硬貨の最小単位が5セントのため、キャッシュで支払う場合5セント以下は5セント単位に切り上げ(または、切り下げ)られることにもへえっと思いました。

ケベックシティでこれを経験した時にはお釣りをごまかされたのかと思いましたが、バンクーバーでレシートを見ると税金を合わせたトータルが6.79ドルで、rounding 0.01ドルが加算されて合計6.8ドルになってましたのでそういう仕組みかと合点しました。なお、カード払いの場合は1セント単位で請求されます。

このサイトによると、ペニー廃止に伴う措置のようです。
日本でいうと一円玉の流通を廃止するということなので想像がつきません。

These days companies are more worried about retaining key employees than cutting payrolls to save money.

ex) Workforce is low b/c companies need to save money. Easiest way for a business to save money? Cut payroll. Rule#1 of business.


★They're not unhappy with their current situation. 彼ら現状をよしとしている。

ex) Not unhappy with load testing results on the new infrastructure I've been building for $BIGCHARITY



★innate, 生来の、生まれつきの

It's a way of describing of a job candidate's innate sense of curiosity.

ex) Weddell seal pups have to learn to swim. It's not innate.
They start learning at ~5-6 weeks.


★inarticulate, 歯切れの悪い、はっきり意見の言えない

Another big negative for mw is how inarticulate some candidates are.

ex) Job interview 3 days countdown (actually 2.5) gradually becoming inarticulate. By Friday probably will be limited to words of one syllable.



★present oneself, 自分を売り込む、自己紹介する、自己表現する

How the person presents himself or herself is at the top of my list.

ex) If your girl or your dude can't present herself/himself in the appropriate fashion, that impacts your opportunities.


★at the top of someone's list, (人)のリストのいちばん上に、(人)が最優先事項としている、
(人)が最も重要視している

How the person presents himself or herself is at the top of my list.

ex) Don't give your ALL to people who don't put you at the top of their list.
