今回の（３）のビニエットで、dictateという単語も出てきましたが、先週に引き続きビニエットのディクテーションを続けています。
リスニングの段階としてよく聞くのが次のような段階です。
１．音を聞き取れない。
→知らない単語はまず聞き取れません。
また、単語と単語の間の音がつながるなど理由で音の変化があると聞き取れません。これはよくあります。
ここを矯正するのがディクテーションの大きな目的なのでしょう。
私は、辞書を使ってなんとか単語を見つける、ということをしています。
（３）では、Others use kitchen (???) for compost と聞き取れ、(???)の部分は聞き取れなかったのですが、残飯という意味の単語だろうなと目星を付け、辞書を調べた結果、scraps （残飯）という単語にたどりつきました。
２．音は聞き取れるが、意味がわからない。
→（２）では、day outという音はわかりましたが、ビニエットの和訳を見る前に辞書を引いて「日帰りの小旅行」という意味を知りました。
このように複数の単語からなるフレーズの意味がわからないパターンは、よくあります。
珍しいのが、単語は聞き取れるが、その単語の意味がわからないというケースです。
（２）で tad difficult の tad は聞き取れたのですが、というか tad にしか聞こえないのですが、tadという単語は知らなかったため、本当にtadでよいのか不安でしたが、tadで正解でした。
tad、ちょっと、という意味でした。
知らない単語でも聞き取れる場合があるという、１の法則の例外という点で、これは珍しいケースでした。

That might be a tad difficult, what with the gray English weather.
このtadはディクテーションできましたが、意味はわかっていませんでした。
★green day out, 環境に優しい日帰り旅行
There are walking and biking routes, plus suggestions for a green day out.
★dictate, 指図する
They usually don't dictate to guests how to conserve energy.
dictate to （人）
です。
★draw the line at, ...まではしない
They draw the line at telling people to take shorter showers.
