今回のテーマ、Don't Work Too Hard は、残業している同僚に向かって、無理するなよ！と、いたわりの意味を込めて使われることがあるそうです。レイオフされるかもしれない恐怖におびえる「愛」のある会社A&Aのprofessionalsにとっては何の意味もない言葉かもしれません。
それにしても今回のレッスンの内容は望みのない内容でした。アメリカでは日本以上に労働時間が長いという統計が36ページに紹介されています。いつの間にそうなってしまったのでしょうか。
今週はビジ英に絞った音読を朝晩30分を目安に行いました。Listening Challenge, Our Magical World含むです。Our Magical WorldででてきたSloppy Joesはどろどろしたバーガーのようですが、アメリカにいたときにもお目にかかったことがありません。東京にもこれを出す店があるようなので今度行ってみます。
ビジ英の他には、積読していた「日本人でも超えられるネイティブ英語の壁」という本を音読し始めています。
この本はビジ英レベルの表現がちりばめられたダイアローグであり、難易度的にも皆さんにちょうどよいとは思うのですが、ビジ英との違いはストーリーがたわいないということです。
各ダイアローグ自体にはストーリーがありますが、それは日常を描いた物であり、毎回のダイアローグでシーンが変わり、連続性がありません。また、ビジ英のような時事を含んでいません。時事問題を含むことが良い教材の条件というわけではありませんが、これこそがビジ英の特長であり、長年支持されてきた理由であることを実感しました。
