米国赴任119週目が終了。

4月よりラジオ英会話を聞き始めました。朝食の時にバックグラウンドに流していましたが、なかなかよい番組なので7月よりテキストを購入しています。

なかなかよいというより、かなり、いや、すごくいい番組ですね!

聞いていらっしゃらない方は、一度聞いて見られるとそのよさがわかるはずです。

そのよさを一つ挙げるとすると、文章が短い、ということです。それにひきかえ、ビジ英の一文の長さといったら。。。

そんなラジオ英会話7月号の英会話リテラシーというコーナー(7月23日放送分)でとても興味深いことを遠山先生がおっしゃっているのです。

それは「英語圏では水平的人間関係を建て前としている」ということです。

そのため、年齢に応じた上下感覚を持ち込まない、ということなのですが、たしかに、会社でも上司部下関わりなく、英語は同じです。

また、お店の人と客の関係も「水平的人間関係を建て前としている」という解説が7月の放送でありました。たしかにアメリカでは店の人と客が同じレベルで会話をしています。日本のように「お客様は神様」ではありません。

例えば、スーパーのレジで レジの人が、Hi, how are you doing? を聞いてくるので、OK, good, and you?と客の方も聞き返し、レジの人もgoodなどど返します。ここまで1セットです。客が店の人のご機嫌を伺うという、いかにもアメリカ的なやりとりです。

客は料金を払い、店は商品やサービスを提供するという50-50の対等な取引なのだから、対等に接しているのか? と思っていましたが、これが実は「水平的人間関係を建て前としている」だけだったとは! 本音はやはり客の方が上なのでしょうかね。

フレンドリーなやりとりが実は建て前だったとは少しショックです。

こちらのチャイニーズレストランでGMO Freeと書かれてある場合があります。これは遺伝子組み換え生物 (genetically modified organism)を使っていない、という意味だったのですね。

リンク先の記事「The Case For Transparent Food Labeling - And Not Just For Genetically Modified Food」に次の記述があります。GMOではない食品は "古く、より危険な除草剤や農薬が使われている" と。有機食品も一長一短なのかも。。
