米国赴任113週目が終了。
先日、Amtrakの食堂車でtravel companionと楽しく会話をしていた時に前に座っていた女性から、日本のどこの生まれかと聞かれたので、ナガサキだと答えたところ、別の男性がこう言いました。
We bombed.
ほお、原爆を単に爆弾（bomb）と表現するのかとその時は思いました。
今日、会社のカフェテリアで上司（典型的なアメリカ人）から、もにゃもにゃhail from？と聞かれれました。
ほお、hail fromは、どこの出身かという意味だけど、実際に聞いたのは初めてだなと思いながら、こう答えました。
Nagasaki. You bombed.
新たに学んだ表現を、実際に使ってみたわけです。
上司は、日本人は原爆を落とさないと降伏しなかったから、などとどこかで聞いた正当化をしていました。
まあそれはいいとして、話はフクシマに変わり、今フクシマはどんな状況なのかと聞かれました。
ええっと、氷の壁を作って汚染水を食い止めようとしている、ということを言いたかったのですが、氷の壁のことを、ice wallと言っても、テーブルの皆はポカンです。
そう、 ice wallでは本当に「氷の壁」になってしまうのですね。実際はfrozen soil（凍土）が正しいのですかね。
あんなにポカンとされたのも久しぶりでした。英語のできない日本人ここにあり。
PS どこの生まれかを聞くのは、会話の糸口として万国共通で有効なのですね。

ex) The politicians do not deserve kudos for this. They don't. If anything, the local organizers who've pushed this for years should be praised.

I take advantage of opportunities to sound out people on what they think of the business climate.
ex) if you don't sound out 'wed-nes-day' in your head when you are writing it down, i think you're lying hahahaha
