米国赴任96週目が終了。

ついにこの日が来ました。

12月に網膜剥離の手術をして以来3カ月、私の右目にはガスが注入されており、2000feet以上の高地は禁止、飛行機も禁止、さらに(これが最初は大変だったのですが)寝るときはうつ伏せ寝(横向きも可)を強いられてきました。

日々、ガスの大きさは小さくなってきているのが見えていましたが、数日前についにガスがなくなったのです。3カ月ぶりに仰向けに寝られるようになりました。ぐっすりと寝られます。

さて、本題です。
先日来のマイブームである日系アメリカ人の強制収用の件の続きです。前回はFred Korematsuの子供向けの本(書名について問い合わせがありました。When Justice Failed: The Fred Korematsu Storyです。)を読み、日系人のみをキャンプに収用するという当時のアメリカの非道に憤慨したというところまででした。

先週、San JoseにあるJapanese American Museum Of San Jose ( http://www.jamsj.org/ ) に行ってきました。自宅から車で20分程度の近さですが初めてでした。

この博物館はSan JoseのNihonmachi(日本町)というかつて日系人が多く住んでいたエリアにありました。今では日本食レストランなどが点在するエリアになっています。

さて、この博物館では日系人抑留の展示がメインとなっており、その歴史を学べました。ボランティアのガイドの方がつきっきりで説明してくださいます。私のガイドの方も母親が日本人だったということです。

ここで私はキャンプに関する新しい知識を得ました。日系人の収容キャンプはアメリカ西部(砂漠とか、湿地など環境は悪い)を中心に10か所程度あり、それぞれ一万人規模を収用していました。

鉄条網で囲まれ、外部へはいけないようにしてあったキャンプ地でしたが、鉄条網を超えても周りは砂漠だし、日系人を受け入れる町など周りにはない状態でした。

バラックと呼ばれる建物の一部屋に家族で住み、個人のプライバシーは家族内でも保てなかったようです。隣の部屋との壁が天井まで届いていない構造のため、隣の家族の生活音も筒抜けだったと思われます。

キャンプの中には食堂(mess hall)や、売店、学校もありました。大人は仕事をして、雀の涙ばかりのお金をもらっていました。学校ではスポーツなどのレクリエーションや、外部の学校との対抗戦などもあった模様です。

収用キャンプにはWar Relocation Authorityが運営する収容所の他にも、Department of Justiceが運営する収容所もありました。後者にはなんと日系人以外にもイタリア系アメリカ人やドイツ系アメリカ人も全員ではないにせよ収容されていたというのです。さらにアメリカは中央アメリカ、南アメリカに住む日系人もここに収用していました(例えば日系ペルー人など)。アメリカよ。。。

一方、カナダ西部でも日系カナダ人を収用するキャンプがカナダ政府により運営されていたとのことです。

Fred Korematsuに関する展示も大きなスペーが取られており、ガイドによると彼はヒーローだ、ということです。

先日、ハワイの日系人収容キャンプ跡地を史跡(National Monument)に指定するとオバマ大統領が発表しました。実はハワイの日系人は1%程度しか収容されていなかったそうです。西海岸では全員が収容されていたのとは対象的です。この理由は当時ハワイの日系人はハワイ全人口の35%を占めており、欠かせない人材であったこと(西海岸では1%以下?)、そのため日系人に対する偏見も少なかったことが考えられるとガイドは言っていました。

長くなってしまいました。今日はこの辺りにしておきます。

最後に申し上げます。サンフランシスコに来られた際には、オークランドの猫カフェよりも、サンノゼのこの小さな博物館にこそ行くべきであると。

road-ravagedではtwitterではヒットしません。使われていませんね、この言葉。
というわけで、破壊された道路という意味の例文を掲載しました。

ex) So deep in the middle of nowhere that the  pub has its own defibrillator ... I like how these locals seem to drink
