Fred Korematsu

Fred was born Toyosaburo Korematsu in Oakland, California, in 1919.

Toy and his brothers grew up in a small white house that sat on the grounds of his family's sprawling, 25-acre nursery.

The Korematsus always set aside a number of mochi for a special purpose. Toy would stack three of the cakes, place a tangerine on top, and put one of these displays in each of the ten greenhouse for good luck.

Fred planned to leave the nursery behind and attend college in Los Angels to study business. But his plans were soon dashed. Fred's father could not afford to help a third son pay tuition.
