San FranciscoからGolden Gate Bridgeを渡り、さらに北に11マイル行ったところにあるMuir Woods National Monumentに行きました。
普段訪れているSanta Clara郡立公園とは違いました。さすが、National Monumentです。
National Monumentは国定公園と訳されることもありますが、National Parkに準じる公園のようです。
Muir Woods National Monumentには、redwoodという大きな木の森があります。ただし、規模は他のredwoodがあるNational Parkに比べると小さいです。
ここは非常に人気があり、以前昼間に来たときは駐車場が見つからず、結局歩くことができませんでした。その教訓から今回は8時半に着くようにしましたがすでに駐車場はほぼ満杯でした。
Muir Woodsのあとは、Mount Tamalpais East Peakに登り、San Franciscoの北部の絶景を堪能しました。さらにはMuir Beach Overlookへ立ち寄り、太平洋を眺める、というゴールデンコースです。
Muir WoodsのMuirはナチュラリストでありシエラネバダ山脈の保護活動をしたJohn Muirから取られています。
