I wonderedが文の後につけられているのは、日本語的には、「...と思いました」ということで自然なのですが、これは英語的ではない、英語ではあり得ない形態であるという文章をつい最近読みました。
そこではI thinkを文の最後につけるのは日本語英語、ということでした。つけるなら文頭に、というわけです。
さて、I wonderedが文の後ろにつけられている文をビニエットで見つけた今、I thinkも後ろにつけて良いのかなと思いつつあります。
米国赴任26週目が終了。
先週、ESL learnersのmeetupに参加しました。meetupというサイトがあり、そこにはいろいろなグループがあって自由に参加できるのですが、そこに新しくできたESLのグループに参加してみたのです。
集まったのは日本、中国、韓国、インドなどアジア人の学習者と、ESLの教師であるアメリカ人2人。
初回と言うことでまずはこのグループの発起人が準備したESL Podcast（超有名）のプリントを読んだりしてみました。
ここでアメリカ人ESL教師ボブ（仮名）が、このスクリプトは自然ではないだの、表現を詰め込みすぎているだのと、文句を言いだしました。
さらに、自分が教えてきたESLの生徒は学校と家の往復ばかりで社会と交わろうとしないだの、学校で文法を勉強するのはテストできるからで意味はない、教室の中で勉強しても意味はない、そんなものは自国でやっとけ、comfort zoneから出ろ、と。
さらにさらに、アメリカにいるのだから生のアメリカに触れろ、アメリカの強みはボランティア精神である、だからおまえらもボランティアを通してアメリカの文化風習に触れるべきだ、というようなことを力説しました。
原則は同意ですが、具体的にどうやるのかは今のところ不明です。
ESL学習者の集まりになんでESLの教師が参加しているのかよくわかりません。これもボランティア精神なのかもしれません。
私も含めてアジア人は圧倒された感があり、押されっぱなしでした。
