米国赴任23週目が終了。

日本型オフィスレイアウトがアメリカでも見られるようになってきたという今回のお話ですが、以前よりアメリカのスタートアップのオフィスをテレビなどで見ると日本型レイアウトであることが多いことを思い出しました。

前回のメルマガで私が「The race is very much to the swift. 競争は速い者が勝つことが多い」の「to the swiftの構造がわかりません」と書いたところ、"the +形容詞=人"であるというお便りをいただきました。ああそうかと文法を思い出した次第です。

また、Mr. Potato Headについても、お2人からToyStoryに出ているキャラクターであることを教えていただきました。残念ながら、ToyStoryは見たことがないので寡聞にして知りませんでした。

"You're a shoe. "に至っては3人の方から情報をいただきました。「片方の靴=何をやらしても満足にできない人」、というのが理解しやすいのですが、それは間違っていて何の意味もない、と断言される情報もあり、どれが正解なのかは未だに謎であります。


話は変わり、PHRASEMIXというサイトで見つけた記憶についての記事を紹介します。

記憶するには繰り返すことが必要とあります。ついsitcomの繰り返しも効果があるのかとコメント欄で聞いてみたところ、YouTubeなどの短いものを繰り返し聞くと効率がよいという回答をいただきました。

私のフレンズ学習法は間違っていなかったのです。フレンズはエピソードあたり20分強なのでやや長いかもしれませんが。

また、ビジ英も一回聞いて終わりにしたり、メルマガを書いて終わりにしては、記憶する訳がありません。繰り返しが必要です。

偶然、私がつい最近始めたことに、このメルマガで書いた表現を紙のノートに筆写するというものがあります。ビジ英以外にも英語学習で出てきた新しい表現をこのノートに書いています。あとで見返すのが目的ですが、今のところ見返す時間が作り出せていないのが課題です。

この方法は、こちらで習っている先生から聞いたもので「お清書ノート」というのだそうです。先生自身これが一番効果があったそうです。

お試しあれ。ただし時間はかかります。

リスを公園でよく見かけます。こちらの人にとってリスは野生動物であり、かわいい存在ではないと聞きました。

★show up for work, 出社する

show up

<informal> arrive or turn up for an appointment or gathering.

Employees check in when they show up for work and are assigned a work space for the day.

例文の最後の部分のfor the dayですが、
He's gone for the day. もう退社しました。
という表現があります。

★territoriality, 縄張り意識, 領土権

形容詞はterritorial

Generation Y employees don't have the same sense of territoriality their predecessor had.


★rigor, 厳しさ

severity or strictness:

ex) the full rigor of the law

★watchword, 合言葉、スローガン

a word or phrase expressing a person's or group's core aim or belief:

ex) the watchword for the market is be prepared for anything.

Sharing and flexibility are the new watchwords when it comes to designing corporate working environments.

come up for something

to be eligible for something; to be in line or sequence for something. 

ex) She comes up for reelection in April. 
ex) How soon does your driver's license come up for renewal?

<figurative> recover well after a setback:

to discuss something.:

ex) I have a few things to discuss. Can we meet later and toss them around?
