9月よりSanta Clara Adult EducationのAccent Modificationのクラス（発音とアクセントの授業）に通っています。週に1回、2時間半の授業で3ヶ月くらい続きます。
これまで3回の授業でShort a、Short e、/l/ and /r/ Contrast、Long e、Schwa、Elisionについて学びました。
Short aは、bad、lastなどで、これまで「アとエの中間」みたいに理解してましたが、「口を大きく開け、頬は緊張させ、舌の後を高く上げ、鼻から息を出すようにする」とよいようです。米語ではaの発音の基本です。
Short eは、blend、breadなどで、「口はあまり開けず、頬と舌はリラックス」します。米語ではeの発音の基本です。
日本人にとって難関はダントツで /l/ and /r/ Contrastです。特にrは舌を浮かせないといけないので難しいです。
ratherは、rが2つあるのでなにげに難しかったです。最初と最後に舌を浮かせないといけません。
初回の授業の時にTongue Exercisesという舌を動かすトレーニングメニューを渡され、毎日3回行うようにと先生から言われています。舌を自由自在に動かさないと正しい発音はできないのでしょう。 毎朝一回は練習してます。
日本語のら行は/l/の発音と思っていたのですが、クラスメートのロシア人に私が「らりるれろ」と発音すると、「l d d d r」に聞こえると言われ驚きました。「り」はdi、「る」はdu、「れ」はdeに聞こえるのでしょうか。あらためて発音するとそんな気もします。
Long e は、three、pleaseなどで、「頬を上げ緊張させ、口を横に大きく引っ張るが大きくは開けず、舌は後ろで浮かせ」ます。実はLong eは /iy/ であり、dipthong（二重母音）であるという豆知識をお伝えしておきます。イーの後に/y/の発音が付くというoff-glideなる発音になるのです。このあたり専門的な香りがしました。
schwaについては、unstressed syllableでは母音はschwaとなり、何種類もの音になり得ます。弱く発音され、通常はShort u（発音記号は山型（vが逆さま）のやつ）でよいということです。
Elisionとはc-vのリンキング、つまり子音と母音がくっつくという現象です。soup or saladがsuper saladのように聞こえます。
発音をマスターしてリスニングの向上につながることを狙っております。日本でやっておけばよかったです。
