前々回、Santa Claraという発音が通じなかったという話をしましたが、先週、Caramel Mochaが通じないという経験をしました。
近くのカフェでCaramel Mochaが、きゃらめるもか、では通じないのです。3、4度言い直して注文は通ったものの、支払いを終えた後にも注文内容を確認されるありさまでした。
やはり、Rの発音か、それともイントネーションか？
実は今月からSanta Clara Adult EducationでAccent Modificationのクラスを受けています。ちょうど今週、LとRの回でした。LとRは日本人には難しいわけですが、クラスの他の人は楽々と発音仕分けていました。
先生に正しい発音を聞いてみたところ、Caramelの2番目のaは発音しない、ということでした。つまりカrーメlという発音であると。
余談ですが、授業の後、吉野屋でbeaf bowlを注文するときに、bowlのlが気になってしまいました。lが最後にあるときはちゃんと舌を上の歯の裏に付けなければなりません。
さて、今日、再び試してみました。前回と同じカフェは先週と同じ店員さんだったので、「あのCaramelが発音できない男が来た」と思われ、下手な発音で注文が通ってしまうのもいけませんので、Starbucksに行きcaramel macchiatoを「カrーメl」で注文したところ、一発OK。
目的を達した達成感の私に浴びせられたのが、店員さんからの「Yoshi Jokeって何個あるの？」という、なんのこっちゃという質問。
この店では注文の品を渡すときに名前で呼ばれるのです。その場ではI don't know.としかいえない私。店員さんのNever mind.で会話終了。インタラクティブな会話はまだ壁が高いです。
ちなみに私の名前のYoshiはアメリカでは任天堂の恐竜のキャラクターとして有名みたいです。Yoshi Jokeというサイトも多数見つかりますが、何のことかはわかりませんでした。
