最近デイリーヨミウリを朝、カフェで読んでします。時節柄、トップニュースは選挙がらみの記事です。いくつか時事英語を学びました。

No matter what you call it, the office holiday party is a time-honored tradition in America.
Oh? So it's not all fun and games, drinks and crazy dances?
One junior employee who was at least three sheets to the wind decided to tell her boss that she had a crush on him.
Jaws dropped all around the room, and you could have cut the tension with a knife.
I try to keep my conversation to safe subjects like hobbies, movies or family, and defer to my superiors no matter how "relaxed" I feel.
Some can even have potential legal ramifications.
★once the drinks start flowing, お酒がふんだんに出される
flowで、酒などがふんだんにつがれる、という意味です。
ex) Wine flowed like water.
ワインが飲み放題にふるまわれた。
★time-honored, 昔からある、昔ながらの
(of a custom or tradition) respected or valued because it has existed for a long time.
ex) Of course, there exists a long and time-honored tradition of guitar duets.
★fun and games, 楽しいこと、おもしろいこと
amusing and enjoyable activities:
ex) Teaching isn't all fun and games.
★be three sheets to the wind, へべれけになっている
ヘザーさんは語源が複雑なので説明しませんでしたが、こうありました。
「帆脚索が 3 本も外れて風の吹くままになった船の形容から」
わかりやすいですね。
★You could have cut the tension with a knife, 険悪なムードだった。
tensionの他にも、atmosphere, air, silenceなどがナイフで切れるようです。
There was a silence that you could cut with a knife.
ひどく重苦しい沈黙が続いた。
★defer to, ...を尊重する
submit to or acknowledge the merit of:
ex) He deferred to Tim's superior knowledge.
submitは提出する、しか知りませんでした。服従させる、屈服させる、という意味が最初に出てきます。
★legal ramifications, 法律問題
ramification
(usu. ramifications) a complex or unwelcome consequence of an action or event:
ex) Any change is bound to have legal ramifications.
