Forbesの記事によると、アメリカのDetroitは2012年の全米で最も危険な街だそうです。
人口70万人で、凶悪犯罪率(violent crime rate; murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault)が10万人あたり2,137人。344件の殺人があったようです。
デトロイトは人口減による税収減のため警察の予算も削減され、これが犯罪を増やしているとあります。
しかし、犯罪を減らすには方法があると、Urban InstituteのRomanは言います。
Washington, D.C.はかつて殺人で有名でしたが、街の高級住宅地化と効率的な警察により犯罪率は大きく減ったといいます。(Washington, D.C. long had a reputation as a murder capital, but a combination of gentrification and more effective policing dramatically reduced the violence in the capitol. )
出ました! gentrification!! gentrificationには犯罪率低下という理由があったのですね。
MacGuffin'sがなくなったことを残念がっている場合じゃないぞ、梅村!

2. 英語に関するあれこれ
前回は、コミュニケーションの型の話をしました。今回は、ビジネス英語の型の話です。
本題に入る前に、似た内容のweb記事を見つけましたので、まずは、これをお読みください。
日経ビジネスONLINE 「英語が話せる」はゴールに非ず、問われる"アーティキュレーション"
この記事ではアーティキュレーションというビジネス英語の一つの"型"について、その重要性が語られています。ビジネスでは(英語力)+(ビジネス英語の型、あるいは作法)が必要だということです。
具体的には、会社で英語を使うときの決まり文句とか、話の進め方や、思考法のことです。簡単なところでは、電話の受け方、プレゼンのやり方、会議の進め方などです。それぞれに型がありますね。
仕事で英語を使う場合、これらの型を知らないと、英語だけ知っていても駄目なわけです。まるでビジネスでの話し方を知らない小学生が会社で仕事をするようなものかもしれません。逆に言えば、このような正しい作法にしたがって話せば、つたない英語でも伝わる可能性は高まります。

やはり、ビジネス英語には型があることがおわかりになったと思います。会話に May I interrupt? と割って入るのはていねいではないということでした。May I interrupt? 自体は正しい英語ですが、これをビジネスの場で言うことは、ていねいなやり方ではないのです。
この取材の時には、プレゼンテーションのサンプルレッスンを、ベルリッツのプログラムコーディネーターのHika Itoさんからして頂きました。お金さえあればベルリッツに通いたいと思ったのは本当です。

あれから3年がたちました。私は今、ビジネス英語の"型"を楽しく毎日学んでいます。そう、忘れかけていた夢が実現したのです。

broadcastは、放送する、という意味では1921年から使われ始めたようです。
