英語の話です。
最近、英語の「型」について感じています。
コミュニケーションの型と、ビジネス英語の型です。
まずはコミュニケーションの型の話から。
先日、Vital Englishという英語勉強会に参加しました。200名ほども参加する大規模な勉強会でした。私が普段参加している勉強会と歴史は同じくらいなのに、
オーガナイズのされ具合の違いに驚きました。司会役でVital代表の小田康之さんは惚れてしまうくらいのリードぶり。
その日はコミュニケーション編で「会話が弾むテクニック ～ 英語表現のバリエーション」というタイトル。
自己紹介から始まり、会話をうまく進めるコツや英語表現を学び、グループワークなどを実践しました。学んだこととしては、例えば、open-ended questionsにするとか、聞き返すとか、Good newsやHumorをいれるとか、Common topicsを探すとか、start superficial to gauge interestとかです。
最後のstart superficial to gauge interestとは、最初は表面的な話題を話し、相手が興味がありそうなら深く掘り下げて話すというテクニックです。たまに日本語で会話する際も、相手の興味も考えずに、自分の話したいことだけを話して、相手をしらけさせる（かつ、それに気づいていない）ことがあるので私たちは気を付けなければなりません。
上に挙げた他のコツは基本的なものです。しかし、実践できているかというと私はできていないように思います。日本語のコミュニケーションに型があるように、英語にも型があるのだと思いました。その型を知らないと正しいコミュニケーションはできないのです。
次回はビジネス英語の型の話です。

2. 英語に関するあれこれ
前回、会社の食堂のプリペイドカードの残額が不足しているアメリカ人にかける言葉について書きました。皆さまより、次のような言い方をメールやfacebookで頂きました。
The message says, "Your balance is short."
"Your balance is short."

It indicates "your balance falls short."
---------------------
There's not enough money on your card.
---------------------
not enough funds or money
Lang-8で聞いたらアメリカ人から
"Your card doesn't have enough money" or "There is not enough money on your card" are good options.
とコメント頂きました。２つ目は、、、ピタリ賞です！
"There is not enough money on your card" これで決まりです。
