目玉焼きトーストの件について二件アイデアを頂きました。ありがとうございました。
(1)冷凍する前にパンをくりぬいておく
(2)翌日食べる分だけ冷蔵庫に移しておく

私なりのアイデアとして、(3)冷凍パンをナイフでくりぬく、というのもやってみました。

2. 英語に関するあれこれ

三木谷さんの「たかが英語!」を読みました。

楽天の英語化プロジェクトの話が書かれてあります。興味深かったのはプロジェクトを開始後、社員の不満が予想以上に大きかったことから、やり方を変更し、会社が英語教育を支援し始めたという部分です。PDCAだなあと。

2年間のプロジェクトでTOEICの平均点も大幅にアップしたようですが、やればできるのだなあと思いました。

楽天はすでに海外のEコマース企業を多数買収しており、そういう会社の人と、英語でコミュニケーションすることが普通になっていくのだろうなあと思いました。

★send someone out into the trenches, (人)を現場に派遣する

sendは先月号のPhrasal Verb Diversionに出てきた単語ですが、send someone out intoという表現は出てきませんでしたね。

trench は、a long, narrow ditchとしか載っていません。
海溝もtrenchのようです。

★in action, 活動して

in operation; working:

ex) Watching him in action, normal workers are left in awe.

本講座の英語名称が Business Communication In Action です。テキストの表紙に書かれてあります。


★ivory tower, 象牙の塔

a state of privileged seclusion or separation from the facts and practicalities of the real world:

ex) The ivory tower of academia.

決して学者の世界のこととは限らないようです。


★sit in, 参加する、傍聴する、聴講する、話を聞く

attend a meeting or discussion without talking an active part in it:

ex) The visiting teachers sat in on lessons and had the chance to talk to both teachers and pupils.


★lowdown, 真相、実情、実態


the low-down

the true facts or relevant information about something:

ex) Graduates can get the low-down on the social life enjoyed by KPMG staff.


★take on, ...についての意見[見解、解釈]


これで名詞です。英英辞書では見つかりませんでした。


★expand, 詳しく説明する、詳細に述べる


expand on/upon something
to say more about something and add some details

ex) Could you expand on that point, please?



★What do you make of it? それをどう思いますか[考えますか]。

make something of somebody/something 

to understand the meaning or character of somebody/something

ex) I don't know what to make of (= think of) the new manager.
