絶望の国の幸福な若者たち(古市 憲寿著)を読みました。最近twitterで @May_Roma さんとばとってさらに有名になった古市さんはNHKのNEWS WEB24にも出演中です。

さて、この本は若者論です。戦前から若者論はあるそうです。大人が自分とは異なる考えや行動をする若者を異物を見るような目で特徴つけてきたようです。「近ごろの若者はうんぬん」と言うようになったらそれはあなたが時代についてこれなくなった証拠ということです。また一口に「若者」とくくれるようになったのは最近のことらしいですね。昔は都会の若者と地方の若者とでは暮らしが大きく異なっていてひとくくりには論じられなかったそうです。

ナショナリズムについても知ることができました。江戸から明治になる際に日本国というものを作って諸外国に全員で対抗するために、意図的に身分の差と居住場所の差をなくし、日本のために尽くすのだという論調で教育されてきたそうで、その結果、今では私たちは日本国民としての一体感を感じるようになり、直接の知り合いのいないオリンピック選手やサッカー日本代表を我がことのように応援するようになったとのことです。

本書には書かれていませんが、高校野球で故郷の高校を応援するのはなぜだろうと考えました。江戸時代の藩としての一体感が残っているのでしょうか。

2. 英語に関するあれこれ

GlobalEnglish Corporationの調査によると2012年度、ビジネス英語力でフィリピンがスコア7.11でアメリカを抜いて世界一になりました。第2位はノルウェー、第3位はセルビア、以下、スロベニア、オーストラリア、マレーシア、インド、リトアニア、シンガポール、カナダと続きます。

アメリカのスコアは低下しているのですが、その理由は海外から労働者が来ているのでその結果、英語力が下がっているとのこと。

GlobalEnglish社はビジネス英語力は経済成長の一つの指標であると言っています。

日本はスコア4以下で、グローバル市場で戦うには問題のあるレベルとされています。


アジア諸国を比べると、フィリピン>オーストラリア>マレーシア>インド>インドネシア>香港>韓国>ベトナム>タイ>中国>カザフスタン>日本>>台湾、という並びです。



下のinfographicsがわかりやすいです。Beginner(0-3)に約4割の国が入り、台湾、日本の他、南米、アフリカ諸国が入ります。Basics(4-6)が6割を占め、中国、韓国他、ほとんどのアジア諸国はここです。Intermediate(7-8)はフィリピン一国のみです。Advanced(9-10)はゼロとなっています。


日本がやはりアジアの中では最低レベルの英語力しか持っていないことが明らかとなる一方、台湾が日本以下の英語力という結果も面白いです。台湾は世界的企業も多いですから。

またフィリピンがアメリカを押さえて1位になったということで、(この記事もスカイトークのフィリピンの先生から教えてもらったのですが)、これからもスカイトークのskype英会話を続けて行く論拠ともなるものでした。

Reputable companies now make a point of having their brand ambassadors fully disclose their relationships and not try to trick people.
 
Those are certainly valid concerns.

I guess the challenge is to strike a balance between building a brand in a forthright way and giving students employment opportunities, while avoiding practices that could manipulate undergraduates.

★forthright, 率直な

saying what you think honestly and clearly:

★manipulate, (巧みに)操る [操作する]

[mainly disapproving] to control something or someone to your advantage, often unfairly or dishonestly

ex) Throughout her career she has very successfully manipulated the media.
