10月8日に第3回SF NewTech JapanNightセミファイナル
を聴講しました。
SF NewTechは、サンフランシスコで開催されるイベントで
Webサービスのベンチャー企業が自社のサービスを観客に
5分間プレゼンし、観客と5分の質疑をするというものです。
プレゼンの目的は投資家から投資してもらうということが
メインなのでしょう。
で、JapanNightというのは、日本の企業だけがプレゼン
するというイベントです。
過去には、Lang-8も参加しています。
さて、私が今回参加したのは11月に行われるサンフランシスコでの
第3回SF NewTech JapanNightへ出場できる代表6社を選ぶために
12社がプレゼンをするという予選会でした。
品川のマイクロソフト本社で行われました。
私は英語で行われるというこのプレゼンと質疑を聞くことを
目的に参加しました。
午後1時から8時という長丁場でしたが予選会以外にも
色々とイベントがあり、貴重なお話が聞けましたので、
次回からエッセンスをご紹介します。

2.英語に関するあれこれ
「グロービッシュ実践勉強法 手島直樹(著)」を読みました。
昨年あたりから話題になっているグロービッシュ。
1500語でよいというあれです。
著者の手島さんははMBA取得者で、アクセンチュア、日産を経て、現在はIR系の
財務アドバイザリーを行う経営コンサルタント会社を経営しています。
本書はビジネスで使う英語をグロービッシュという潮流に沿って、
その到達すべきレベルと学習法を全くの初心者の方を対象に説明
しています。
著者は「そろそろ日本人は英語は実は簡単だと気づくべき時ではないか」
と言います。
要は英語はExcelと同じだ、使えればよいのだ。実務ではExcelの達人に
なる必要はないのと同じく、仕事で使えるレベルの英語力があればよい、
というものです。
Excelに例えるあたり、目から鱗ですね。
グロービッシュは1500語でやりましょうということですが、本書では
「読む、聴く」はそれでは不十分であり、ネイティブレベルが必要と言います。
この部分はかねてより私もグロービッシュに対する疑問として持っていた
ことです。ネイティブは1500語で話したり、書いたりはしてくれないからです。
また、「英語学習に終わりはない」とよく言われますが、これは英語ビジネス界の
キャッチコピーだと言い切っています。だからさっさと英語の勉強はやめて
仕事で英語をつかいなさい、と。
これは後頭部をガツンとやられた気分です。
私なんか、このマーケティング戦略にまんまと乗せられていますから。
