英語「なるほど!」ライティング―通じる英文への15ステップ
遠田 和子 (著), 岩渕 デボラ (著)  を読みました。

たいへん良い本なので3回に分けてご紹介します。

本書は「本当に伝えたいことを、自然な英語で伝えられるようになる」
ことを目指しており、目指す英語は3Csです。
Clear, Concrete, Confidentです。

本書は次の3パートからなっています。
Part 1 英語のセンテンスを組み立てる
Part 2 アイデアを英語らしく表現する
Part 3 センテンスからまとまった文章へ

今回はPart 1からいくつかご紹介します。

まず主語について。英語では主語をいろいろと取ることがきます。
特に無生物主語が英語らしい表現になります。
日本語を英語にすると受動態が多くなりがち。
そんなときは能動態の英語に直しましょう。

というようなことがPart 1 には書いてありました。

■意味を考えてみよう。今日取り上げる単語が含まれています

I'd have cut him a little slack if it was, but from what I heard
of the conversation - and with his loud voice, I really had no
choice - his wife had phoned to ask him to pick up some pork
chops for dinner on his way home.

We were chatting about work when a burly, no-nonsense 
conductor immediately asked us to relocate to another car.

The whole flying experience has become more stressful,
what with less legroom, reduced service and more intrusive
security procedures at airports.

When I fly, I find the best way of turning out crying babies and
people with loud voices is to put on my headphones
and let Bach and Mozart soothe my nerves.

If you describe someone as a no-nonsense person,
you approve of the fact that they are efficient, direct,
and quite tough.

ex) She saw herself as a direct, no-nonsense modern
woman.

intrusive, 出しゃばりな、押しつけがましい、煩わしい
──────────────────────────────────────
Something that is intrusive disturbs your mood or your
life in a way you do not like.

ex) The cameras were not an intrusive presence.

soothe nerves, 神経を静める
──────────────────────────────────────
Something that soothes a part of your body where there is
pain or discomfort makes the pain or discomfort less severe.

ex) body lotion to soothe dry skin
