Sympathy for Japan, and Admiration - NYTimes.com

There's a common Japanese word, "gaman," that doesn't
really have an English equivalent, but is something like
"toughing it out." And that's what the people of Kobe
did, with a courage, unity and common purpose that left
me awed.

We've all got to pull together.

Educators, entrepreneurs and everyone else in the community
have to work together as a unit and take on the responsibility
for nurturing our kids and setting them on the right path.

It's all too easy for employers to throw up their hands and
moan and gripe about how today's young people aren't up to
scratch and all the rest of it.

Well, faith can move mountains, but I think it takes more
than that to instill skills and a work ethic into some of
the slacker types you run into nowadays.

Sometimes you have to go out on a limb and act on faith.
