I was a witness to my first public birthday spanking.

It wasn't a serious, disciplinary kind of spanking, but
I really didn't get it.

It apparently originated as a kind of initiation ceremony
which emphasizes the "specialness" of the child and invites
him or her back into the fold and symbolizes wishing good
luck to the birthday honoree.

How very quaint.

I was under the impression that the birthday spanking
custom had pretty well died out in this day and age.
