ひさしぶりに英語関連のpodcastをいくつか登録してみました。

一時期はあまりにも登録し過ぎて、聞けなくなったので
かなり数を絞ったのですが、終了したpodcastなどもあり、
最近聞くものがなくなることが出てきたので。

■今日の表現1

I've never had reason to visit the "First State,"
as Delawareans proudly call it.

これまで私には、デラウェアの人たちが誇りを持って呼んでいる
「最初の州」を訪れるきっかけがなかったのですが。

きっかけ、がreasonなのですね。

as Delawareans proudly call it で、
「デラウェアの人たちが誇りを持って呼んでいる」
となり、その直前のFirst Stateという名前がその土地の人の
呼び方であるということです。

例文です。

We have "Golden week" in May, as the Japanese call it.

最後のitが微妙です。不要ですかね。

I had a great time there, thanks. It made for a nice break.

おかげさまで、向こうではすばらしいひとときを過ごしました。
楽しい休暇になりましたよ。


休暇で遠くに行ったときは、いつでも使える表現です。
このまま覚えましょう。

What made you decide to go to that part of the country?

どうしてそこへ行こうと決めたのですか。


ふつうなら、Why did you decide to go to ... となりますが、
ここは、What made you decide to go to ... も使えるように
なりましょう。見た目の英語力がアップします。

I hate to rain on your parade, but I'm afraid that when
I think of Delaware, only chemical factories come to mind.

水をさすようなことを言いたくはないのですが、デラウェア
というと、残念なことに私の頭にはどうしても化学工場しか
浮かんでこないのですよ。


トニーヒューズ、思い切り水をさしてますね。

水をさしたいときにはこの表現が使えます。

a nice shade of green.

そうなのですか。それは皮肉な話ですね。というのも、
デラウェアは緑の多いすてきなところでしたから。

いっこ上のトニーヒューズに対する、志賀洋の反論です。
シニカルな突込みにはシニカルに返すという高等技ですね。
