これまでビジ英を語彙力増強に使ってきました。。
このメルマガもその線で書いています。
しかし最近、オンライン英会話を経験しているなかで
難解な表現よりも、もっと基本的な会話能力がない
ことを実感しつつあります。
ビジ英のスクリプトにも覚えたほうが良さそうな表現
がいくつかあります。今回の例で言うと、
I just don't feel comfortable (doing ...)
...をするのはどうも落ち着かない
reassess one's priority in a very fundamental way
かなり抜本的に優先事項を見直す
They can't be absolutely certain that ...
彼らは...という確信が持てない
などです。
こういう表現を自由自在に操れるようになることも
必要なことだと思います。
昔（今も？）ラジオ英会話で、今日の表現などとして
こういう表現が取り上げられていたことを思い出します。
結局、そちら方向に行き着くのだろうか。。

持ち家の純資産価格を担保にして、一定の限度額まで融資を
受けられる個人銀行として扱うようになりました。
人々はかつてないほど節約してお金をため、クーポン券を
切り取っています。
そして、グレートレイクスのように、消費者売上に直接頼っている
あらゆる企業にとっては、景気回復が一部だけにとどまるという
見通しは、実に気がかりなものです。
では、皆さんご自身はどのようにこの不況を乗り切ってきたのですか。
妻が家じゅうのものについて倹約し始めたときには、不況を実感
しましたね。

Much to my consternation, she stopped buying my favorite
imported ginger marmalade.
In my case, my wife and I had to do some fairly serious
financial juglling to keep our children's college-education
fund topped up.
Maybe I'm over-cautious, but I just don't feel comfortable
purchasing such a big-ticket item during the uncertainty
that comes with a recession.
At my local supermarket I've seen people thinking twice
in checkout lines and returning some items to the shelf.

top upは、容器をいっぱいにする、グラスになみなみと注ぐ、
という意味ですが、ジーニアスには「年金や保険の給付金を上積み
する」という意味も載っていました。
