Daughers and Sons at the Workplace (1) 4/15 2009

The idea is for parents to take their children to their workplace
for a day to give them a better idea of what they do for a living
and what the working environment is like.

Then a few years ago the program was expanded so that boys could
take part too, because it was felt that it's a good idea for everyone
to explore career opportunities at an age when there's more flexibility
in terms of gender roles.

I'll make a point of mentioning to Rebecca just how hard and dedicated
a worker you are, Melinda.

That actually means a lot to me, since teenagers often have a negative
image of their parents.

Seeing mom or dad in the totally different context of the workplace
can help further parent-teenager communication.

do something for a living, ...
The work that you do for a living is the work that you do in order to
earn the money that you need.

ex) Father never talked about what he did for a living.

= investigate

If you explore an idea or suggestion, you think about it or comment on it
in detail, in order to assess it carefully.

ex) The secretary is expected to explore ideas for post-war
reconstruction of the idea.

make a point of, かならず...する
If you make a point of doing something, you do it in a very deliberate
or obvious way.

ex) She made a point of spending as much time as possible away from
Osborne House.

If something means something to you, it is important to you in some way.

ex) It would mean a lot to them to win.

If you further something, you help it to progress, to be successful,
or to be achieved.

ex) Education needn't only be about furthering your career.

put in an honest day's work,
