Child Safety Campaign (1) 9/17 2008

Mike, what was the overall reaction from the school boards
you canvassed?

Thumbs up and full steam ahead.

That's why we've taken the initiative to craft a
nationwide campaign.

We're focusing on a simple set of rules to prevent or
fend off kidnapping and sexual abuse.

If you canvass public opinion, you find out how people
feel about a particular subject.

ex) Members of Parliament are spending the weekend
canvassing opinion in their constituencies.

If you give a plan, idea, or suggestion the thumbs-up, you
indicate that you approve of it and are willing to accept it.

ex) It more or less gets the thumbs up from everyone.

If you go full steam ahead with a project, you start to
carry it out in a thorough and determined way.

ex) Ms Thatcher declared it was full steam ahead
for a fourth term of government.

If something is crafted, it is made skilfully.

ex) Many delegates were willing to craft a compromise.

fend off, ...
If you fend off questions, problems or things that you do
not want, you avoid dealing with them or refuse to accept them.

ex) It was the first time Daniel had spoken, except to fend
off questions.
