米国赴任92週目が終了。
1月30日に、Fred Korematsu DayのイベントにSan Franciscoまで行ってきました。Fred KorematsuはCalifornia州 Oakland出身の日系アメリカ人で、第二次大戦中に日系人がキャンプに収容された際、それを拒否し、後に逮捕され、人権派弁護士とともに、最高裁判所までアメリカ政府と闘いましたが破れ、キャンプに収容されました。
戦後、その判決は違憲であったと新たな判決が下り、1998年にFredはクリントン大統領からアメリカにおける民間人への最高の勲章であるPresidential medal of freedomを受けました。このようにcivil rightsのために闘ったactivistとしてアメリカで有名な人のようです。2005年没。
California州ではFredの誕生日である1月30日をFred Korematsu Dayと制定し（名前にアジア系アメリカ人が冠されるのは初めて）、今ではアメリカの全ての州でこの日が制定されているとのこと。祝日にする働きかけも行われているようです。
没後10年のこの日のイベントでは地元の小学生の演じるFred Korematsuの一生の劇も上映され、観客の大きな拍手を呼んでいました。
この日のスペシャルゲストは、スタートレック俳優のGeorge Takeiでした。私は実はこの人を見に行ったというのが正しいのですが、Georgeも戦争中はキャンプに収容されたそうです。
Q&AセッションでGeorgeは、収容キャンプでは正月のお祝いや、餅つきをおこなったというエピソードを披露していました。会場にはGeorgeのhusbandであるBrad（Georgeのスケジュール管理をしているそうです）も来ており、観客の拍手を受けていました。
戦争相手国の日本を祖先に持つ日系アメリカ人を差別することは誤りだったと公式に認めたアメリカですが、現代も似た状況にあるとGeorgeは言います。アメリカはテロと戦っているが、アメリカに住むイスラム教徒への差別はおこなってはいけないと。
