先週紹介したIce Bucket Challengeですが、批判的な意見も出てきて思わぬ展開となっていますね。

最近、近くにある郡立公園 Joseph D Grand County Parkに行きました。夕暮れに開催されたパークレンジャーによる動物講座に参加しました。
パークレンジャーとはたぶん公園の管理人です。
付近で見られる動物、シカ、コヨーテ、ウザギ、ボブキャット、フクロウ、ヘビなどの皮や剥製を展示し、解説していました。
そこでコウモリの巣を見ました。それは薄い木製の箱状で、内部が板でさらに薄い空間に区切られているようでした。その公園ではその箱がいくつも設置されており、そこでコウモリを住まわせていました。
日没と同時に巣から小さなコウモリが次々に餌探しのために森に飛び立っていく様が動物講座のクライマックスでした。
コウモリを保護するという発想はそれまでなかったのですが、コウモリを保護している理由はレンジャーによると、虫を食べるから、ということでした。
コウモリの巣はbat boxまたはbat houseと呼ばれているようです。
