こちらアメリカでリスニングに苦労しているのは皆さんご承知の通りですが、リーディングやライティングはどうなのだという声にお答えして、今日は「電子メールによる異文化コミュニケーション」について現状を報告します。
実はすごく苦労しているのです。リスニング以上かもしれません。
メールで日本人以外に質問や依頼をしてみたとします。
返事が返ってこないことがデフォルトです。
日本人が舐められているのでしょうか？ ちゃんと返事を返す人も半分くらいはいます。
こちらの人は多忙のためメールのすべてに応えられないと、先日の研修でRochelle Koppさんも言っていました。これだと信じたい。
返事が来たとしても、質問に答えずに、違う角度から自説を論じる人もいます。少なくとも二人います。
これが最大の問題です。俺の質問に答えろよ（怒）という感じです。こういうやりとりを続けていっても、何を合意したのかも不明、論点も不明で話が先に進まないのです。
もし2つの質問をしたら、2つ目は無視されてしまうと思ってください。一つ目を回答して、次のメールの処理に移ってしまうのでしょう。そのため最近は、極力短いメールを書くようにしています。長いメールは答えてもらえませんから。
日本人の期待するコミュニケーションは、両者で確認を積み重ねながら、ゴールに向かうというものですが、そういうプロセスができないことが多いです。
異文化コミュケーションという言葉に対して、今までは何かふわふわしたとらえどころのないものと思っていましたが、リアルに直面している今日この頃です。
よい対応策をご存じの方は教えていただけますか？
