本の整理をしているときに「日本人は英語のここが聞き取れない」という2003年頃に購入したと思われるリスニングの本を見つけました。そうだ、これをやってみようと。
実は、最近購入した「最強の英語リスニング実践ドリル」というリスニング本にもチャレンジしたのですが、難易度が私には高すぎて、そうそうに挫折。
「日本人は英語のここが聞き取れない」は1000時間ヒアリングマラソンの一コーナーが本になったらしく、難易度も優しめです。基本はディクテーションをすることになっています。最初いくつかのレッスンをやってみましたが、確かに難易度は低いです。しかし、間違えます。
ディクテーションは単なるリスニング力以外にも、文法や表現を知っているかが重要となりますが、特に、表現や単語を知っているかどうかはディクテーションの結果に大きく影響すると感じました。
例えば、sharp painという表現が出てくるのですが、shortと間違えた人が多かったというデータがヒアリングマラソンにはあるとのこと。しかし、ここはsharp painでしょう。short painとか聞いたこともないし。というわけで、そういう言い方を知っているかどうかがディクテーションには重要と。
ほかにも、都市名や国名は日本語のカタカナ読みからは大きく違う場合があります。本書に載っている例ですが、ズーリック、アシンズ、サイベリアと発音する都市はそれぞれどこでしょうか?(答えは下のほう)
「100万語聴破CDシリーズ3 ラリーキングライブスペシャル」というCD付きテキストも本棚で見つかりました。これも2003年の発売のものですね。このころリスニングに凝っていたのでしょうね。二冊とも買っただけでしたが。このラリーキング本もなかなか速いスピードのインタビューが収録されているので聞いてみようかと。
やはり生の英語を教材にしないといけないと思うわけです。
