The restaurant itself doesn't really advertise much, but
its solid reputation's the best possible form of advertising.

You can be pretty sure you're onto a good thing when you
hear about it through the grapevine that way.

hear through the grapevine, 口コミで耳にする
──────────────────────────────
If you say that you heard something through the grapevine,
you mean that you heard about it informally from your
friends, colleagues, or acquaintances. In British English
you can also say that you heard something on the grapevine.

ex) I hear through the grapevine that you are getting
ready to sue us. If that's true, I want to hear it from you.

この表現の語源ですが、テキストに電話線をgrapevine(ブドウのつ
る) に見立て、grapevine telegraphを「信頼性のない情報」の
意味で使ったとありますが、これに関する追加情報です。

コウビルドによると、アメリカ南北戦争時にtelegraph(電信)が
戦線の正しい状況を伝えるとともに、プロパガンダにも使われた
ことから、grapevine(=電信)から聞く情報は信頼できないという
ことになったようです。
