結局GWは新書を一冊読んだだけだったな。

学習することができます。


下のほうの、番組から探す、から探してください。

重要センテンスを聞いたり、日本語表示、英語表示を

■今日の表現

I guess there's something to be said for the Japanese customs 
of bowing instead of shaking hands.

この、there's something to be said for ですが、
...には注目すべきだ、 ...には何らかの利点がある

とテキストではなっています。

手持ちの辞書には載っていませんでしたが、Googleで検索すると、
このメルマガの2005年2月のOffice Romance(2)で取り上げて
いました。

その名も、「しっくり来ないコーナー」という名のコーナーで。

5年経ってもしっくり来ないので、再掲します。

悩みを打ち明けられる人の存在というのはやはり大切ですね。

がしっくり来なかったのでGoogleで調べてみました。

"there is something to be said" で検索。

exciteの「研究社 新英和・和英中辞典」で以下を発見。
まんざら捨てたものでもない. There is something to be said for it.

英辞朗にもありました。
There is something to be said for 注目すべきは?である。 

英辞朗に従うと、
「注目すべきは泣くための肩である」となり、
「悩みを打ち明けられる人の存在というのはやはり大切ですね」
と、まあ近いかなという気がするので、これにて終了。

載ってましたよ。

Something to be said for something

意味 reasons why something has advantages 

ex) There's a lot to be said for living alone. 

ex) There is something to be said for a news organization 
that doesn't follow the network pack.

Usage notes: can also be used in a negative way: 
There is very little to be said for this argument.

■意味を考えてみよう。今日取り上げる単語が含まれています。

stinkは「悪臭、悪臭を放つ」という意味ですが、
「うさんくさい」という意味もあるようです。

You use fellow to describe people who are in the same
situation as you, or people you feel you have something
in common with.

ex) Even in jail, my fellow inmates treated me with
kindness.

fellowというと、「仲間」というイメージを持っていましたが、
上の定義によると、「自分と同じ状態にある人」のことでもある
ようです。電車の乗客は仲間ではないですもんね。

辞書等では見つかりませんでしたが、
Signs of Recovery (4)でも出てきた、think twice「よく考える、
熟考する」と同じようなものでしょう。
