I have a couple of friends who are college professors,
and they say the trend in academia is to de-emphasize
the role of standardized tests and put more weight on
interviews and recommendations.

They also say more emphasis is put on deterring cheating, 
as opposed to trying to catch students in the act.

Another relevant point here is that it's not just lazy
and amoral students who are to blame for this problem.

The severity of punishments can vary dramatically from
expulsion to a lower grade.

academia, 学究的な世界、大学(の世界)
Academia refers to all the academics in a particular country
or region, the institutions they work in, and their work.

ex) the importance of strong links between industry and

deter, 防ぐ、思いとどまらせる
To deter someone from doing something means to make them
not want to do it or continue doing it.

ex) Jeremy was not deterred by this criticism.

catch someone in the act, 現行犯逮捕する、現行犯で捕まえる
If you are caught in the act, someone sees you doing something
secret or wrong.

ex) The men were caught in the act of digging up buried

be to blame for, ...に対して責任がある
If someone is to blame for something bad that has happened,
they are responsible for causing it.

ex) The policy is partly to blame for causing the worst
unemployment in Europe.

expulsion, 退学
Expulsion is when someone is forced to leave a school,
university, or organization.

ex) the high number of school expulsions.
