という本を著者のお一人、上田さんより献本いただきました。
この本は世界史と英語を同時に学べてしまうという
優れものです。
私は高校のときは日本史だったので、世界史は
ほとんど知らずに今まで来ました。
そのためか、海外のニュースを見るときなど、
その歴史的背景や、何百年にもわたる民族間の
関係などがわかっていれば、よりよく理解できるだろう
と思っています。
「ニュースの背景知識としての歴史」、
これが私には欠けているのです。
例えば、イスラエルはなぜあれほどもめているのかが
わかっていないので、いつも戦争をしている、という
イメージしか持てないわけです。
本書は、ヨーロッパ、中東、アメリカ、アジア、アフリカ、
オセアニアの歴史と文化をカバーしているので、主要な
世界史の大部分をカバーできます。400ページに渡る大作です。
また、この本は各項のタイトルが読む気を誘います。例えば、
「民主主義の意義」を理解するには、
「古代ギリシャ」を知らねばならぬ！
「EU」を真に理解するには、
「フランク王国」を知らねばならぬ！
現代のヨーロッパの秩序を真に理解するには、
第一次世界大戦を知らねばならぬ！
現代社会の宗教紛争を真に理解するには、
「イスラーム教の成立」を知らねばならぬ！
どうですか？知りたくなるでしょう？
付録の「絶対覚えておきたい！世界の固有名詞600」は
カタカナ発音との違いを発見できます。
また、付録CDに収録されている世界遺産の旅は、
その土地土地に興味を沸かせてくれました。
本文のところどころに英語でこう言う、という説明が
ちりばめられているので、世界の歴史と英語を学びたい方に
