We're just one of many companies that are forgoing splashy,
lavish events as the recession bites into our profits.

Having your company's name prominently displayed on the
event notice board at a four- or five-star hotel isn't
going to endear you to people who've seen news reports
about how your business has been freezing salaries because
of the economic downturn.

Great Lakes doesn't want to be seen as a show-off, profligate
company at a time when many of our customers are having
trouble making ends meet.

We have to strike just the right note when it comes to
showing people that we're a company that knows how to adapt
and keep abreast of the prevailing social mood.

I hear that kind of image-conscious thinking is having quite
a negative impact on places like Las Vegas, a city that to
many people symbolizes the big-spending, in-your-face culture
of corporate greed and excess.
