But I feel sickened by the way some unscrupulous con artists 
tried to rip off my mother.

And like many people in her situation, she'd been trying
to find a way out of her predicament.

I've been hearing a lot lately about retirees being bilked 
out of their life savings by slick operators offering
attractive-sounding but fake investment schemes.

feel sickened by, ...で気分が悪い  
If something sickens you, it makes you feel disgusted.

ex) The notion that art should be controlled by intellectuals
sickend him.

unscrupulous, 悪徳の、あくどい  
If you describe a person as unscrupulous, you are critical
of the fact that they are prepared to act in a dishonest
or immoral way in order to get what they want.

ex) These kids are being exploited by very unscrupulous


scrupuluous 良心的な、誠実な
scruples 良心のとがめ

predicament, 苦境、窮地  
If you are in a predicament, you are in an unplesant
situation that is difficult to get out of.

ex) Hank explained our predicament.

be bilked out of, ...をだまし取られる  

To bilk someone out of something, especially money, means
to cheat them out of it. [AM][INFORMAL]

ex) He disappeared in 1980 after being convicted of
bilking investors out of $3 million.

slick, ずる賢い、調子のいい  
A slick person speaks easily in a way that is likely to
convince people, but is not sincere.

ex) Don't be fooled by a slick politicians.
