It seems to me that middle-class consumers are ruling the roost.

If you peek into the consumer psyche, you can see why
belt-tightening and brand switching are hallmarks of new
consumer habits.

be stung into action, 行動に駆り立てられる
[ODE] sting someone into
provoke someone to do (something) by causing annoyance
or offence

ex) he was stung into action by an article in the paper.

cogitate on, ...をよく考える
If you are cogitating, you are thinking deeply about something.

ex) You're listening and cogitating are you?

rule the roost, 支配する、牛耳る
If someone rules the roost, he or she is the most powerful and
important preson in a group.

ex) In Germany, scientists will be found at the top of many
manufacturing companies; in Britain, accountants rule the roost.


consumer psyche, 消費者心理
In psychology, your psyche is your mind and your deepest
feelings and attitudes. [TECHNICAL]

ex) 'It probably shows up a deply immature part of my psyche,'
he confesses.

hallmark of new consumer habits, 新しい消費者性向の特徴
The hallmark of something or someone is their most typical
quality or feature.

ex) His designs shows a love of simplicity which is very much
his hallmark.
