New Year's resolutionではなく、January's intentionとしましては、
テキストを買っている、実践!英語でしゃべらナイトを見たいと思います。
初回は1月6日 Eテレ午後11時〜です。

2. 英語に関するあれこれ


年末にNHK Eテレで「語学コロシアム」という番組がありました。アスリートと
英語という切り口で、欧州で活躍するサッカー選手とか取材されていました。


その中でも、前から疑問だった「外国人力士はなぜ日本語がうまいのか」
についても取り上げられていました。


おすもうさんが日本語が上達が早いわけ、として次の4つがあります。


24時間英語付け
バラエティ豊かな人間関係
五感で覚える
強い動機


これ以外に「女将さんの存在」というのがありました。母親のように細かに世話
をしてくれる存在も大きいのでしょうか。

number of the people in the room were using laptops.

He  slammed his fist down on the table and declared an immediate ban
on laptops in corporate meeting rooms.

This new policy is going to be a bitter pill for many people to swallow,
including yours truly.

to discuss something very thoroughly and carefully, especially until you
reach an agreement:

Did I hear you right? 私の聞き違いでしょうか。

ヘザーさんの解説では、
Did I hear you correctly? がよりformalな言い方。
Did you just say what I think you said? も同じ意味。
Yes, you heard that right.というのもよく聞かれる言い方。
驚いたかもしれないけど確かに私はそう言った、という意味。

blow one's stack, 怒りを爆発させる、かっとなる
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
If you blow your stack, you become very angry with someone and shout
at them. [mainly AMERICAN]

ex) Whenever I feel  like I'm going to scream or blow my stack or punch
Louise in the teeth, I head for my quiet place.

slam one's fist down, こぶしをたたきつける

If you slam something down, you put it down with a lot of force, often

ex) She slammed the jug down onto the tray.

If a person or group or group has to accept a failure or an unpleasant
piece of news, you can say that it was a bitter pill or a bitter pill to
swallow.

ex) You're too old to be given a job. That's a bitter pill to swallow.

You can say yours truly as a way of referring to yourself.
