昨日から冬休みに入り、この長期休暇をどう過ごそうかと
わくわくしております。


日向先生が「ビジネス英語雑記帳」で勝間和代さんの英語を
診断しています。


勝間さんの英語は典型的な日本のエリート英語という診断で、
大きく問題はないということで、ほっと(?)しました。

ただ、英語運用能力が高いので、独自の言い回しを作ってしまい、
コロケーション的には不自然に感じる部分があるようです。

我々も気をつけたいところです。

勝間さんは留学や長期海外滞在経験はないということですから、
私を含めて、そういう方は勝間さんレベルの英語を目指したい、
いや、目指せるはずだと思います。

■意味を考えてみよう。今日取り上げる単語が含まれています。

Lunch has been difficult for most places since it's easy
for customers to cut out or replace it with a brown bag
from home.

At first I was a bit taken aback by her suggestion, but
she convinced me that these days it's not so unusual.

The waiter took her request in stride, and we had a very
pleasant meal, I'm happy to report.

These days people aren't ashamed of being frugal.

Even something as humble and everyday as cheese has become
more expensive, which has hit the bottom line of many
pizzerias hard.

cut out, ...をやめる、...を控える

To cut out something unnecessary or unwanted means to remove 
it completely from a situation. For example, if you cut out
a particular type of food, you stop eating it, usually
because it is bad for you.

ex) I've simply cut egg yolks out entirely.

If you are taken aback by something, you are surprised or
shocked by it and you cannot respond at once.

ex) Derek was taken aback when a man answered the phone.

In British English, if you take a problem or difficulty
in your stride, you deal with it calmly and easily. The
American expression is take something in stride.

ex) Beth was struck by how Naomi took the mistake in her
stride.

People who are frugal or who live frugal lives do not eat 
much or spend much money on themselves.

ex) She lives a frugal life.

A humble place or thing is ordinary and not special in any way.

ex) There are restanrants, both humble and expensive, that
specialize in them.
