2020 L21 Cyberbullying

|
I hope you're having a good day.

Social media

★act on, ...

More people need to hear it and act on it.

I will act on information from the government.

I really admire your civic-mindedness.

Japan and Singapore can deepen ties despite Covid-19, geopolitical strains: Panellists at symposium

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/japan-and-singapore-can-deepen-ties-despite-covid-19-geopolitical-strains-panellists

Mr Chee added that Singapore can learn from Japan its "X factor" - the people's resilience and civic-mindedness.

Despite the sudden and devastating east Japan earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, he noted that the Japanese cared for one another in the community, and only collected the food and blankets they needed at distribution centres, keeping in mind others who also needed the provisions.

Japanese people are said to be civic-minded.

What can we do to prevent personal information from being used in a manipulative or humiliating way by unscrupulous cyberbullies?

Japan timesより

Japan to seize high-priced masks from unscrupulous sellers

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/04/26/national/science-health/japan-seize-high-priced-masks-unscrupulous-sellers/

That store is unscrupulous. They ripped me off.

★be dismissive of, ...

Some people are dismissive of cyberbullying, and bullying in general.

Billionaire Howard Marks Regrets His Dismissive Comments on Bitcoin

https://cryptopotato.com/billionaire-howard-marks-regrets-his-dismissive-comments-on-bitcoin/

I used to be dismissive of BTC, so I'm surprised to see today's BTC boom.

To downplay Biden, White House directs all agencies to refer to 'Biden-Harris Administration' in official communications

https://getoutspoken.com/exclusive/to-downplay-biden-white-house-directs-all-agencies-to-refer-to-biden-harris-administration-in-official-communications

★gain a new lease on life, 活気を取り戻す

It shut its doors a couple of years ago after most of the stores there went out of business, but now it's gained a new lease on life.

turn over a new leafを思い出しました。

I was exhausted and went to bed to gain a new lease on life.

That's quite an indictment of American society, isn't it?

Gender inequality is an indictment of Japanese society.

Medical bills, crippling debt or other personal financial difficulties mean they can't afford to pay for housing.

Web

More students are taking on crippling debt they can't repay? It's time for higher education to share the risks.

https://www.brookings.edu/blog/up-front/2018/02/16/more-students-are-taking-on-crippling-debt-they-cant-repay-its-time-for-higher-education-to-share-the-risks/

Those factors also play a role.

そこで、Collinsで引いてみると、play a part/play a roleで、

If something or someone plays a part or plays a role in a situation, they are involved in it and have an effect on it.

Poverty plays a role in terrorism.

"Homeless college student" sounds like a contradiction in terms.

oxymoron(撞着語法)もビジ英では頻出ですね。

You're tired of sleeping? It's a contradiction in terms.

(4) find themselves out on the street
(4) find themselves facing homelessness
(5) find themselves homeless
(5) find themselves out on the street

I find myself surf the net while studying.

I hope you're having a good day.

★have a firm grasp of, ...

They need to have a firm grasp of that kind of thing.

have a good grasp of
have a poor grasp of

I didn't have a firm grasp of the company rules and screwed up.

★where someone is coming from, (人)の考え方[見解、気持ち]

While I see where they were coming from, I think parents should be upfront with their children when it comes to things like buying a house or a car.

I see where the listeners are coming from when they heard the program would end.

I understand their reticence, but it's counterproductive.

My brother said to me, "You became reticence."

While my folks were loath to talk about the sordid realities of money, I got a solid grounding in personal finance by working as a paper boy in my neighborhood.

I was shocked to see the sordid reality of the company.

It's also common during the summer months for high school kids to burnish their college applications by volunteering in places hit by hurricanes or forest fires, or honing their sports skills.

I used to burnish my shoes on Sunday mornings.

★be deluged with, ...

Authorities across the country have been deluged with complaints about scammers like that.

The teacher was deluged with thank you message of listeners.

They've cheated credulous seniors out of millions of dollars during the pandemic.

I am credulous of what people say.

★more than worth one's [someone's] while,

I kept telling them it would be more than worth their while to take an introductory computer course and learn some basic skills.

for a whileとか言いますしね。

The radio program was worth my while.

We need to create virtual spaces on the internet that can sustain our sense of community and togetherness while it's still inadvisable to physically meet.

It is inadvisable to go to such a place.

The pandemic has underlined the need to democratize the internet and eliminate the digital divide.

The pandemic democratized online meetings.
